The Tree Hutt (the children’s area of the Hutt Hospital Emergency Department) is extending the ‘distraction therapy’ concept by developing a uniform (scrub top) to occupy children’s attention further.
The Tree Hutt is a child-friendly environment with murals, themes and toys that is the key to distraction, which increases the child’s ability to cope by stimulating them to concentrate on something else. For many children it takes their minds off the strange smells, sights, sounds, fears and anxiety that they may not have experienced before. Having clinical staff wearing a uniform (scrub top) that supports the Tree Hutt theme will help increase the distraction factor and present a less threatening environment for children. The scrub tops are in development and should be seen in the Emergency Department in the near future.
